GHANA

BRIEF OF SUBMITTED SOLUTION

Currently in Ghana, there is about 1.2 m3/ha of wood exploited from forest reserves annually, (FOSA,2001; Oliver2005) with a very low recovery rate from wood waste produced from lumbering and sawmilling processes. This raises a business idea of processing wood waste such as sawdust and wood chippings into the making of profitable goods such cardboards and paperboards. This business idea simultaneously provides solution to local environmental issues such as deforestation and land degradation through lowering the rate at which trees are cut down to manufacture products that wood waste could provide. Biodiversity loss which is another huge challenge faced currently with proof of species going extinct in forest habitats in Ghana due to habitat loss (deterioration of forest reserves through indiscriminate tree felling) could also be reduced. Environmental pollution from wood waste burning and inappropriate disposal, from over 200 small scale sawmills in Ghana registered with the Timber Industry Development Division according to the source book on small scale sawmills in Ghana which would serve as a raw material for the business which could also be minimized.
