GHANA

BRIEF OF SUBMITTED SOLUTION

This proposed project is a demand-driven initiative to resource the Tono reservoir fishers to build the needed capacity and skills for the adoption of cage culture, which is a more reliable livelihood activity to supplement their threatened profession.
One cage (100m capacity) will be allocated to fishers operating in each of the six bays. The aim of this pilot project is to assess fish’s adoption of cage culture as a livelihood activity to improve their living standards. The cultured fish will be ready for harvesting within 6 months. Harvested fish will be sold fresh to the general public. Orders will be taken to supply specific markets, such as restaurants, hotels, caterers of the school feeding programme (SFP) and food vendors within and outside the municipality. A portion of the revenue from the fish sales will be applied to finance subsequent production cycles to sustain and expand the project. The rest of the revenue may be used to improve their living standards.
