NIGERIA

BRIEF OF SUBMITTED SOLUTION

Farmers pride Network was created in 2017 to combat postharvest loss issues across various agricultural value chain by promoting cottage processing in Nigeria, training cottage processors and providing technical support in areas of processing, packaging and providing market linkages.

At the moment, Africa is stuck right at the bottom of global value chains. We only produce and export commodities that have very little value but depend so much on imported finished or value-added products. This is why Africa is always seriously affected whenever there is a price fall in the commodity market. For instance, when the prices of cocoa beans fell, Ghana and Ivory Coast lost over $1 billion each just in a swoop. But what if they were processing these cocoa beans into chocolate and its derivatives? Obviously, they would not be so affected by the commodity price crash. Whereas the price of coffee beans keeps plummeting, the price of coffee drinks at Starbucks keeps increasing. However, this is obviously not any good news for Africa. We can not keep remaining at the bottom of global value chains. We need to build cottage industries, process, patronize our local products, and also export value added products to make agriculture a wealth creating sector, build resilient and sustainable communities.
According to National Bureau of Statistics trade report, A total of N2.1 trillion food products were imported into the country from January through September in 2021, indicating a 75percent rise when compared to N1.2 trillion in the corresponding period of 2020. Promoting cottage processing will not only help reduce food importation it will also create jobs and wealth across the country.

The company’s contributions in various agricultural value chains and across Nigeria communities attracted series of awards and recognitions from an impressive list of local and international organizations such as:
1. Tony Elumelu Foundation 2016 entrepreneurship award in Lagos Nigeria
2. 2016 Africa Entrepreneurship Award in Casablanca Morocco
3. LEAP Africa – Social Innovators Program 2017 in Lagos Nigeria
4. 1st All African Postharvest Loss Technology Innovation Award -2017 in Nairobi Kenya
5. AfDB 2018 Africa Youth Agripreneurs Award in Abidjan Ivory Coast
6. Certification in Agribusiness SMEs Model and Value Chain from Institute of Green Bio Science and Technology (GBST) Seoul National University, Seoul, South Korea sponsored by Africa Development Bank (AfDB) and Korea-Africa Economic Cooperation (KOAFEC), 2019
We have worked in partnership with Technoserve Nigeria on Rockefeller Foundation’s Yield wise Project, GAIN (Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition), Kaduna State Ministry of Agriculture etc.
